“Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” The music classroom provides rich opportunities for SEL instruction on a daily basis. There are companies that sell SEL curriculums to school districts, forcing teachers to add another activity, possibly regarded as another passing educational fad, to their overflowing plates. Music teachers, however, can intentionally embed SEL instruction without having to modify their curriculum.
