                                                                   Bernadette Scruggs, President-Elect

Bernadette Scruggs is the Director of Orchestras at Peachtree Ridge High School.  She has taught in the Gwinnett County School System for ten years at the middle and high school levels.  Mrs. Scruggs earned her Bachelor of Music in Education and her Master of Music in Education from Columbus State University, where she played both violin and French horn in University ensembles. Prior to teaching in Gwinnett, Mrs. Scruggs taught for the Floyd and the Clayton County School Systems.  In Floyd County, she taught high school chorus, elementary music and eventually began an orchestra program at the elementary level.  After receiving her Master’s degree, Mrs. Scruggs taught orchestra in Clayton County.  Her responsibilities there included directing the Clayton County Honor Orchestra, which, under her direction, performed for the Georgia Music Educators’ Association in Savannah, Georgia, and for the Southern Division Music Educator’s National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.  Mrs. Scruggs has also been a director for the Clayton County Youth Symphony, at which time the group was accepted to perform at the GMEA convention.  At Pointe South Middle School, where Mrs. Scruggs taught for eleven years, the orchestra was invited to perform for the Georgia Music Educators’ Annual Conference in 1994 and she was voted the 1995 Pointe South Teacher of the Year.  After moving to Gwinnett County to become the orchestra director at Hull Middle School (1997-2003), her eighth grade orchestra was invited to perform at the 2000 Georgia Music Educators’ Annual Conference.  While Mrs. Scruggs was at Hull, the orchestra grew from 150 to over 450 students and she was voted the 1999 Hull Middle School Teacher of the Year.  For the past eight years, Mrs. Scruggs has been co-director of the Gwinnett County Kendall Honor Orchestra, which was invited to perform at the GMEA conference in 2004. Mrs. Scruggs has hosted many district events including Large Group Performance Evaluations for both District VI and District XIII, and district All-State auditions.  She chaired the committee that proposed adding a middle school All-State Orchestra as well as the committee that constructed an updated adjudicator’s form for the Orchestra Large Group Performance Evaluation.   She has served as the GMEA Vice President for Performance Evaluations, state treasurer for ASTA, vice-chair of District XI and XIII, and orchestra chair of District XI.  As a GMEA certified adjudicator, Mrs. Scruggs has judged at orchestra festivals throughout Georgia and also in Las Vegas, Nevada.
